French at TCU

Students who take French at TCU have a broad variety of courses to choose from.  The department offers classes in language, linguistics, culture and literature.  Students develop their speaking skills in all courses.  Interactive exercises and activities are an essential part of all classes.  In addition to courses that develop all four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, more specialized courses such as Phonetics, Advanced Conversation, Intermediate Reading and Writing, Culture and Civilization, Linguistics, and Literature are offered on a regular basis.

In addition to coursework, the student of French at TCU has the opportunity to participate in a variety of on-campus activities that reinforce their knowledge and skills in French.  The student French club, Ensemble en Français, organizes events each semester such as playing la pétanque, preparing and sharing cuisine from Francophone countries, movies, and other activities.  In addition, students can practice their oral skills in an informal, weekly French conversation session Le Coin français, organized by department faculty. Other learning opportunities can be found in the Language and International House Living/Learning Community residence hall.  Finally, department faculty regularly lead TCU Summer Study abroad programs in France where students experience first hand life in France and study its language, history, and culture.
