The Major in Modern Language Studies with a concentration in French opens up a multitude of career paths.  Mastery of French and understanding of the culture in French-speaking countries will prove essential in careers in Medicine, Nursing, Finance, Engineering, Pharmaceutical Research, Museum Careers, Teaching, Business, International Law, Fashion Merchandising, Travel, Interpretation, Translation, Diplomacy, Military, Cuisine, Sales, Film Industry, or Aero-spatial Industries.

 

The BA with a major in French Studies requires 30 semester hours in a combination of French language courses and area studies courses. Each student forms a program of study in consultation with a faculty adviser in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.

 

To earn a major in French Studies, students must complete a total of 30 hours in French courses (taught in French) and interdisciplinary courses from other departments. Students must complete 15-18 hours in French courses at the 30000 level or above.   The content of these courses may be language, literature, or culture and must be taught in French.

 

In addition, students must complete 12-15 hours of courses that are thematically related to their French Studies. These courses may be chosen from the list of approved courses, but others may also be counted, with the approval of the major adviser. These courses must come from a minimum of two departments.
