About the Program

Peer tutoring is available on an appointment basis for current TCU students who are enrolled in a credit course in the following languages: German, Italian, French, Japanese, and Chinese.

Who Is Eligible?

Students who are currently enrolled in a 3-hour credit course in one or more of the languages offered in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures may receive up to 10 hours of FREE tutoring in any given semester.  The Peer Tutoring Program provides assistance first to those students who are encountering difficulty with class assignments and/or the general management of the language learning experience.  For example, students who need assistance in developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills can request to work with a tutor. However, students who want extra practice may still request appointments, and we will do our best to accommodate their needs. A student who has accumulated 10 hours of tutoring may become eligible to continue in the program after consultation with her instructor, her tutor, and the peer tutoring program coordinator.

Who Are The Tutors?

Tutors are high intermediate to advanced learners of one or more of the languages offered in the Department of Modern Languages or Native speakers of one of these languages.  Tutors are selected based on their proficiency and competence in the target language, then trained by the coordinator of the Peer Tutoring program to apply one-on-one tutoring techniques and methodologies that are specifically suited for foreign language learning.

How Does The Program Work?

Eligible students may request an appointment with a tutor online.

To Request an Appointment Online:
Students who wish to make an appointment with a peer tutor must go to: http://www.rich75.com/tcu

Then, follow these steps:

  1. Register to Create a free student account
  2. Access the online schedule (Tutors are listed as well as the language they tutor)
  3. Click on a white square below the appropriate time and to the right of the tutor you want to work with
  4. When the “Reservation” box appears, enter the pertinent information in all the required field
  5. Click SAVE

Where Do The Students Meet Their Tutors?

Students go to the Language Media Center in Reed Hall 16 to meet with their tutors.

What Are The Tutee’s Responsibilities?
Once students receive confirmation of their appointment from their tutors, they are expected to keep the appointment and arrive on time.  If students anticipate a scheduling conflict or experience a medical emergency and must cancel, they must notify their tutors immediately

Cancelling An Appointment:
To cancel an appointment:

  1. Return to the schedule
  2. Click on appointment
  3. Click on the “cancel” box
  4. SAVE

Important Note:
Students who know they will miss their appointments or miss by accident and do not notify their tutors three consecutive times in a same semester will become ineligible to receive any tutoring help during the rest of that given semester.

What Materials Should Students Bring To Their Appointments?
Students should bring their textbook and a written copy of their assignment/work. If the assignment/work is online, students should know the URL that is required to access it.

What Should Students Expect From Their Tutors?
Tutors are not teachers but coaches. They will be able to:

  1. Explain the language concepts that beginning and intermediate learners have to master;
  2. Offer various practice exercises in all four skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing);
  3. Engage students in communicative activities
  4. Share strategies for learning and maintaining key skills that have been helpful to them when they were beginning and intermediate learners;
  5. Offer online and/or other resources.

What Will Tutors NEVER do?
Tutors will NEVER complete any assignment for their tutees. Instead, they will provide the necessary assistance to help the tutees become progressively more confident in their abilities and more independent in their learning. Tutors will NEVER predict or guarantee grades.
