Chinese German Italian Japanese
Programs

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers students the opportunity to learn Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Japanese. Language is inseparable from culture, and we conceive of our mission from the standpoint of the “National Standards for Foreign Language Education” (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). The so-called ACTFL Five Cs are:

  1. COMMUNICATION: Communicate in Languages Other Than English
  2. CULTURES: Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures and perspectives of the culture studied
  3. CONNECTIONS: Connect with Other Disciplines and Acquire Information
  4. COMPARISONS: Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture
  5. COMMUNITIES: Participate in Multilingual Communities at Home & Around the World

In this vein, we offer students the opportunity to get a B.A. with a Major in Modern Language Studies with concentration in either French or German. Taking advantage of TCU’s innovative new core curriculum, the new Modern Language Studies major will combine rigorous work in an approved language, emphasizing all skills, with related courses in other departments. The result is an interdisciplinary major especially well suited to prepare students for employment in the global marketplace.

Furthermore, we offer a minor in French, German, Italian, and Japanese. We have also offer Chinese and look forward to the program growing.

Peer Tutoring in Modern Languages

In an effort to help our students learn, the department has set up a peer tutoring program through which students can obtain help from peers more advanced in their language skills.
